The Federation negotiates on all aspects of pay, allowances, hours of duty and pension matters.
The Federation is at the forefront of promoting equality issues nationally and within force and can advise on issues relating to all forms of discrimination and Fairness at Work issues.
We can provide free legal advice and representation for many issues including criminal, discipline, traffic and personal injury. We can also provide legal advice and representation for unlawful discrimination and pension appeals.
Under the Federation Fund Rules we can provide the following (this list is not exhaustive):
You can request a copy of the Fund Rules from the Federation Office.
In addition to areas covered under the Fund Rules the North Yorkshire Police Federation Joint Branch Board also run a number of other schemes, which are optional for members. These include:
A Group Insurance Scheme providing life, critical illness, personal accident, sick pay, travel and legal expenses cover;
Most of these local schemes are open to members spouse/partner and families and wherever possible are available to members of Support Staff and other police staff associations. More detail of these schemes can be found under the 'Member Services' area of this site.
The Federation directly funds two insurance policies at no cost to members. One of these policies provides cover for drivers of police vehicles in case of being permanently disabled whilst driving a police vehicle or their own vehicle whilst on police business. The second is jointly funded by the Police Authority and provides reimbursement of travelling expenses while undergoing treatment following any accident on or off duty.
Who are we?
The remit of the Police Federation is extremely wide, being defined in the Police Act 1964 as "welfare and efficiency". This wide definition allows the Federation to act on virtually any issue relating to its members or the force in general.

The Police Federation is the staff association, which represents the vast majority (98.5%) of police officers in North Yorkshire. Our members are every police officer from the rank of Constable through to Chief Inspector.
The voice of the Police Federation is regularly heard on TV, radio and in the press as we campaign on your behalf to ensure that you and fellow officers are given a fair deal financially, legally and professionally.

At Area and Departmental level your representatives are involved in Area Management, JNCC and Health and Safety Committees as well as in consultation on local issues.
Constables elected as federation representatives are also appointed as Safety Representatives under the Health and Safety at Work Act and Regulations, under the leadership of Mark Botham. All our Safety Representatives are professionally qualified to at least the Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH) Managing Safely in Policing Services standard. They meet quarterly to share best practice.
What does the Federation cost me?
The weekly subscription to the Voluntary Fund is £4.98 per week for members of the Federated Ranks from Constable to Chief Inspector. The monthly deduction is £21.58 per calendar month.
If you think that is costly, then think again. How costly would it be to have professional and legal advice at your fingertips when you need them, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year? What if a prisoner dies accidentally while in your custody, what if you have to use force in an arrest, say a newspaper prints defamatory comments about you or suppose a suspect makes a false allegation?
Members are advised that subscriptions to voluntary funds are tax deductable.
The Federation Medical Scheme is not an ‘insured scheme’. The scheme is open to serving officers of all ranks, members of support staff and their husband / wife and children under 21..
